Photo Log 36: Balloon Attack!

Which material will protect a water balloon the best?

 Bubble Wrap?

 A Plastic Bag?

 Newspaper?

 Or Cardboard?

 Let the testing begin...

Only water balloons protected by bubble wrap or a plastic bag survived the fall.

Photo Log 35: The science fair testing continues...

Our Question Is: What will happen if we leave an egg in different liquids over
two days?

Materials we used: 

4 eggs, 1 cup of coke, 1 cup of vinegar, 1 cup of salt water, 1 cup of milk, and 4 plastic cups.                                   

Step 1: Place 4 eggs in 4 plastic cups.
Step 2: Fill each cup with a different liquid (Vinegar, Salt water, Coke and Milk).
Step 3: Leave for 3 days.

Step 4: Observe what happens to the egg shell over the 3 days in your experimental notebook.

Step 5: Take the eggs out of the liquids, what do you see, smell, feel?

Photo Log 33: Becoming Scientists!

Two groups from the Winged Warriors conducted their very own science experiments today.
Check out the photos below to see what tests they carried out.

Mentos Explosion!
Question: What happens if you put Mentos into different types of
fizzy drinks.

Materials: Water, Mentos, Lemonade, Fanta, Cola, Diet Cola

Step 1: Take the mentos out of the packet.
Step 2: Take the lid off the Fanta.
Step 3: Drop the Mentos into the Fanta.
Step 4: Wait and observe the Fanta explode like a volcano.
 Step 5: Do it again with other fizzy drinks.

Experiments were done by Nemiah, Taufia, Kaya, and Jarne

Our Question: Can you make a rainbow using different coloured water?

Materials we used: black card, food colouring-red, green, yellow, 4 clear plastic cups

Photo Log 32: Winged Scientists

Our question: Does the alka seltzer tablet form the bubbles in a lava lamp?

 Step 1: Pour 125 mls of the oil into each big bottle.

 Step 2: Then add 300 mls of water into each bottle.
The oil should float like this.

 Step 3: Add three drops of different food colouring; like red, blue or green into separate bottles.

 Step 4: Put 2 teaspoons of salt, into the funnel which is on top of the pink bottle.
Put 2 tablets of alka seltzer into the green bottle.
Put 2 tablets of nurofen into the blue bottle.

 Our observations:

 When we added 2 tsp of salt to our lava lamp we observed bubbles forming slowly in the water.

  When we added 2 alka-seltza tablets to our lava lamp we observed bubbles forming quickly in the water.

 When we added 2 nurofen tablets to our lava lamp we observed that there were no bubbles :)

Photo Log 31: Nature Force trip to Tiritiri Matangi

Kaya, Nemiah, Jarne and Tiane were lucky enough to visit Tiritiri Matangi to learn about conservation and meet some of the native fauna and flora of New Zealand.

Photo Log 30: WALT find fractions of a set.

 We used unifix cubes to support our thinking.

 When finding thirds of a whole, you must have three equal parts.

Four birds shared a 20-cube worm. They each got

one-quarter. How much of the worm was that?

 

We know that half of one-half is one-quarter. 

So, first we halved the 20-cube worm and then halved each half.

We ended up with four equal sections of the worm.

So we know that each bird gets 5 cubes of the whole worm.
