Our Local Marae
Yesterday the High Flyers of Rowandale School journeyed down to our local Marae. We went there to learn more about our fantastic culture. It was so exciting. It was my second time there, so I knew where everything was.
Firstly, we bounced onto the bus and took an extraordinary bus ride to the beautiful Marae. Next, we got dropped off at the Marae. As we arrived, I nudged Nemiah's shoulder and whispered "this brings back memories doesn't it?" It really did. We were welcomed on to the Marae with a Powhiri. After that we were told a story about two brothers called Tamapahore and Tamapahure. They were always trying to be better than the other. So one day, one brother built a hulking kite, the other brother being so jealous cut the string and sent it soaring away.
The most interesting thing of the trip was going into the Wharenui and doing the activities. Because, when you had to search the Wharenui for objects on a piece of paper, it was like the 'Amazing Race'. Once you had completed that obstacle, you moved on to the next one, which was drawing. That was the thing that I found most interesting at our local Marae.
My favourite part was going on the Hikoi (Maori word for bush walk), it was astonishing to see the thousands of Mangroves growing in the river. We kept on journeying up the steep hill. I then glimpsed something out of the corner of my eye... Teeny tiny black lizards were scurrying behind the rocks. That was my favourite part of the Marae trip.

1st you take a raw egg and put it in a cup of vinegar.
We also put one egg in a cup of water and a cup of lemonade.
Next week we will observe the eggs to see what effect each of the liquids has had on the shell.

Most of us were pleasantly surprised how good it was.

Our garden is out of control!
Check out the size of our beetroot leaves.
So next week is harvest time for the Winged Warriors.
These beans have gone to seed, so we will have to replace them...

Photo Log 18: Maori Art
After a visit to the Manurewa Marae, we were inspired to create some Maori Art of our own!
First, we designed a Kowhaiwhai pattern.
Then, we carved part of our pattern into a polystyrene block.
Next we used rollers to apply ink to the block.
Carefully, we pressed the inked block onto the paper, then repeated the process.
Soon, our designs emerged onto the page.
Patiently, we waited for the ink to dry.
Finally, we hung our finished products up onto the rafters.

Photo Log 16: Darrell Our Caretaker
Introducing Darrell Woodhouse, the Caretaker of Rowandale School. He helps to make sure that our school is a clean and tidy place to learn in. He uses a tractor to mow the fields. We have a playground that has a lot of bark. When the bark ends up on the courts, Darrell comes around and sucks it up with his high powered vacuum. Furthermore, Darrell is a dedicated supporter of the Warriors, as well as the Winged Warriors (of course)! :)

What is a paper helicopter and how does it fly?

Dylan's Hypothesis:
I think if we add extra weight on to the paper helicopter if will spin faster, because it will be heavier.
Our conclusion:
We can accept Dylan's hypothesis, because the paper helicopter spun much faster after we had attached a paper clip to the bottom of it.
